Rexdale Women’s Centre announces Executive Director retirement after 37 years of leadership:
Dr. Saadia Akram-Pall steps into Interim Executive Director role.
(Toronto, December 4, 2024) - The Rexdale Women’s Centre (RWC), an organization dedicated to supporting immigrant and newcomer women and their families, today announced the retirement of its Executive Director, Fatima Filippi, effective December 31, 2024.
“During Fatima’s outstanding service over the past 37 years, RWC has evolved from a team of 3 to a nearly 100-staff organization providing services across four sites in Etobicoke, Toronto, and impacting hundreds of thousands with essential services and support every year,” says Sabina Filipescu, Chairperson of the RWC Board of Directors. “Her visionary leadership has helped create a supportive community of inclusion and belonging, helping people build fulfilling lives in Canada.
Under Fatima’s stewardship, RWC’s programming and services address challenges to education, employment and gender-based violence while continuously evolving to meet the growing needs of the community. Her vision has cemented RWC as a vital resource and hub in the community, as well as an advocate for immigrant women and their families.
“On behalf of the Board of Directors, we wish Fatima a happy retirement and thank her for the commitment, championship of women and for moving the needle on social justice issues,” added Filipescu. “A compassionate mentor and people leader fostering a culture of collaboration, Fatima leaves RWC with a strong foundation on which to build and support the community in even greater ways.”
Effective January 1, 2025, the RWC Board of Directors has appointed Dr. Saadia Akram-Pall as Interim Executive Director to oversee operations and maintain continuity for staff, clients, and donors. Saadia’s tenure at RWC spans over two decades, and she has been a key member of the senior management team, most recently as the Director of Programs. An executive search will begin shortly to fill the permanent role.
