The Importance of Volunteering When You are a Newcomer

Chantal Noelene McFarlane (2019-07-01)

Being new to a country can be very daunting. Especially when you are faced with the task of searching for a job and the main feedback from interviewers is that you need Canadian experience. Your response, rightfully so, “how do I get Canadian experience if no one would hire me?” The answer lies in volunteering!

Volunteering is an important aspect of the Canadian culture. Not only is it beneficial to the community as it provides local organizations with much needed support but it is also very beneficial in helping you secure a job. It gives you access to the workforce, where you can learn about Canadian work culture and become aware of employment opportunities. And most of all, volunteering gives you the much needed Canadian experience to add to your resume.

When you volunteer with an organization in your chosen field you are able to build a professional network which will give you leverage when applying for jobs. Volunteering with an organization does not mean that you will land a job with that organization. But, by building your professional network you will be introduced to individuals in the field of choice. Volunteering builds your sense of connection to community and makes the transition into a new environment easier.

If English is not your first language volunteering helps you to build on your English Language skills and make social connections. By strengthening your English you will have a better chance when applying for jobs. Finally, a lot of organizations are willing to provide volunteers with a letter of reference after they have committed a certain amount of time to that position. This is very beneficial when applying for jobs. With your new found Canadian experience you will have someone who is able to vouch for your amazing work ethic here in Canada!
